Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875) only signed paintings and drawings that were being sold and leaving his studio. When Millet parted with an artwork he would usually sign the work "J.F. Millet" abbreviating his first names.
At time Millet only used his initials "J.F.M." Millet's signatures are very subtle and sometimes hard to see on his oil paintings and pastel drawings.
Millet usually signed along the bottom edge of his artworks.
Signature is rarely sufficient for authenticating a painting. Signatures must be checked, but results must be carefully placed in the correct context. A signature is only one element, and not a determining one, in the process of authentication.
